To be found on a notorious auction site. Is it Real or Is it (counterfeit) Memo(vo)x? (It passes my smell test.) It lists as 43mm diameter - 18k plated (?) Perfect for those who prefer wearing a salad plate on their wrist.

It is a 'memovox small pocket clock" converted into a wristwatch by adding lugs to the center part. So it is a pure frankenwatch, nothing worth buying for sure |

Clavi - good call! I certainly should have caught the lug design as inconsistent with the 60s/70s aesthetics - plus it's a style often used for adding lugs to pocket watches. (Though no excuse, I'm not familiar with the scope of JLC pocket pieces.) I feel unobservant, and rather dim. |

This seems to be a popular conversion for many of the less-than-reputable sellers. The pocket alarms are cheap and they fetch much more after converted to a wristwatch. Clues to look for: 1) Case number stamping on back is 90 degrees out of alignment with where it should. 2) Inner case has no metal content info. All the gold-tone pocket alarms were gilt (thin gold plate) over brass and will never have any gold content designation stamped inside. 3) Huge case/bezel. The converted pocket alarms (38+mm) are much bigger than the standard manual Memovoxes (34/35mm) of the period. 4) Hinged lugs. I know of no Memovox models that ever had this style of lugs. All the conversions have them. Greg |
