Hello All, I am new to this Forum. Please have a look at the attachments and tell me what you think.

1988 or 1989 Marathon "Model 348"

This watch is a real mystery to me. It has a quartz movement which makes it a "Type 3". The body is like the so-called "lost Marathon", but it has a big rubber plug in it and no small aluminum plug to allow a mechanical movement's crown and stem to be removed. Either this watch is a prototype or it's a "Frankenwatch", I reckon. The battery access hole looks to be a properly machined part of the body, i.e. as-manufactured. If it was a modification of a "lost Marathon" body, there would still be a small aluminum plug near the crown and the Marathon markings would have been partly erased. Anyone know anything about this watch? If so, please e-mail to ted[at]kronometric[dot]org

The dial is identical to an early Gallet steel Navigator model 211, as are the hands except that they are white and poorly lumed. The markers' lume is also poorly applied.

The back bears military marks which, although seemingly correct, are poorly embossed. As far as I can make out:

* WATCH, WRIST, GENERAL PURP.
* [the mil spec no] GALLET
* 6645-00-952-3767 348
* W84647 EH02/01 DA 8
* SEPT 88 (or 89)

The markings are high up and abbreviated, presumably because of the rubber plug. It is obvious from the back view that the case was not designed for this particular quartz movement.

The crown is too shiny for a military watch and the springbars really should be either solid, or slide-thru wire like SandY's.

Movement is a Harley-Ronda 373 1-jewel, same as the early Gallet steel Navigator. Being opposite the stem, the battery is 90 degs off from the hatch.

The watch is 34mm wide (excluding the crown), 40mm tall, 12mm thick (excluding the rubber plug), lug spacing 16mm.

My post above is quite messy because the forum auto-censor kept disallowing links, spec numbers, and all kinds of other stuff even tho' I checked HTML as allowed and, in desperation, even auto-activated URL's. I'll try the spec number again:
MIL
W
46374
D

But what's the deal with the censorship?

Hi, unfortunately, as a quartz watch I won't be knowlegeable. I'm sorry.

The site blocks certain patterns of words, not because of censorship but because the forum is continually bombarded with spammers that want to stick advertisements, URLs and other junk that I used to constantly have to police. So, yes, it is restrictive, but if I had to manually delete all the junk, I wouldn't have time to do so and would have to shut the forum down.

Hello Zaf,

A belated thanks and no problem.
