Posted this on the American Watch Discussion this past Tuesday, but no replies yet. I am reposting here in the hopes that I will get a reply (or even two). Hello, all! Found this site looking on the internet for information on a Gruen watch I purchased, but have not received yet. Looks like a lot of knowledgeable people here, so I am hoping you can answer some questions for me. Per the seller: GOLD GRUEN LADIES WATCH 14K GF WITH REINFORCED EXTRA GOLD THIS DOES WORK #2118687 155/73 ARE THE NUMBERS ON IT Here are the questions I have: 1. Any idea as to age/date of manufacture? 2. How can I polish it up without damaging the finish? 3. What kind of band should it have - other than a cord band? 4. Any value? I'm not all that concerned with the value since it is a little under $20.00 in the door, but what the heck. Since I don't have it yet, I will try to upload the one and only picture I have of it.

40s, you can polish the outside with something gentle, yes. Cord band, probably a $50-75 type thing, so don't go crazy on "restoring" it. |

Thanks, Zaf! 1940's? I would have thought 1930's, but you're the expert! I have been using a polishing cloth on it & it is coming up pretty nicely. I would like to get it cleaned, lubed & adjusted since it gains time - yes, I have now received it. Thanks again! |

It could be 30s too, but my gut feel is 40s. If you are so inclined you can do timing adjustments yourself if you're within say 4mns/per day. |

It doesn't show it in the picture I posted, but there is engraving all the way around the sides of the case and around the perimeter of the back of the case. Would a 1940's watch have that? No, it gains more than 4 minutes a day - more like 5 to 10 minutes an hour!!! Besides, I'm too chicken to try to open it up! If I wasn't, I could get the watch's number off the movements and find out the year. Again, thank you for your help! |

I see. I'd say if it has carved sides, then yes, it is more fo a 30s piece. 5-10 mns per hour needs a watchmaker...yup! |

That's kind of what I thought, Zaf. Again, THANK YOU. |
